About Karen Wilson:

I am a clinical social worker, a Masters of Social Work, who has worked for over two decades in the social work field. I have worked front line as well as providing individual therapy. I have worked with people from all walks of life with a variety of experiences, struggles, and concerns. I started my career working with developmental trauma which includes abuse, relationship and attachment breakdowns. Growing up with things that happened to you manifest in a variety of ways which is what you may be experiencing now. I truly believe in the power of healing, in fact, science has shown we can change these patterns/connections in our brain, neuroplasticity. I also believe healing starts with safe connection, within the therapy room and within ourselves. I create a safe place to share, explore, connect, and make sense of your experience. We will process this together, you no longer have to be alone. My experience and training will help to guide us through this process, but you are the expert on yourself. We can heal these parts of you so you can move beyond the pain and struggles you are experiencing and live a life your choose to live.

My Approach:

I use an eclectic approach, utilizing and incorporating a variety of therapeutic theories and modalities to meet the individual’s specific needs. I believe different pieces of different modalities can be helpful depending on what is going on for the person. Everyone is different; therefore, different things work for different people. Having said that, I believe what we do, our behaviours are because we are trying to manage our thoughts and feelings, our reactions to things that were done to us. I believe we are affected by our relationships and experiences both past and present and believe we hold these within us.

I work within a relational, attachment, strength-based, person-centered lens and like to work experimentally. I like to start by exploring your internal experience, both thoughts and feelings and how this shows up, how your mind and body reacts to different things and experiences. Once we make these connections we explore and get to know your nervous system, what brings your energy up and/or down. We will learn about how to support your system in order to help it work for you, not against you. This is just the start though. This will allow your mind and body to start making new connections (new neuro-pathways) which will lead to your body reactions being less intense and your mind being less ‘busy’ which will help you to feel more settled. It is when your mind and body are less activated, when you feel more settled that we can truly start to heal.
