About us:

VISION AND MISSION OF OUR CALGARY COUNSELLING CENTER:

Curio Counselling supports and empowers clients through collaboration and with curiosity so they can experience meaningful and lasting change that allows them to heal, grow, and thrive in all areas of their lives.

BEHIND THE NAME:

A curio is a rare, unusual, or intriguing object considered to be of special interest or value. Our name is a reminder that each person is unique, interesting, and valuable, and as such, deserves counselling services that are tailored to meet their individual needs.

The word curio is also a shortened form of the word curiosity, which comes from the Latin cūriōsus, meaning “careful” or “inquisitive.” Our name highlights our commitment to approach our clients with curiosity, working hard to understand each client’s needs and wants. We also encourage our clients to increase their self-awareness by being compassionately curious about themselves.

What to expect:

Whether you’ve participated in mental health counselling in the past or this is your first time talking with a therapist, you might be wondering what to expect when you come to see us at Curio Counselling in Calgary.

The purpose of counselling is to work with a trained therapist to create the changes in your life that you want. Talking with a counsellor can help you understand yourself better, learn new ways of coping with the challenges and stresses in your life, improve your relationships, and increase your overall wellness.

Talking with a counsellor is not the same thing as talking with a friend or trusted loved one. Conversations between you and your therapist have a specific purpose and are designed to help you accomplish your goals. In order for counselling to be effective, you must be prepared to share sensitive, personal, and private information that may be distressing at times.

During the course of counselling, your beliefs and perceptions may be challenged, you may find yourself annoyed, tired, confused, distressed, or overwhelmed. This is common and usually means you are challenging yourself and trying new ways of being. Your counsellor is trained to support you throughout this process.

Our values:

Compassionate Curiosity:

The desire to learn about or understand something better is a valuable tool for personal growth. Exploring our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours in counselling increases our self-awareness and our ability to understand ourselves. Curiosity can motivate us to strengthen our connections with ourselves, others, and the world around us. Compassionate curiosity also encourages us to question and explore without judgment and to be open-minded to possibility.

Person-centred Approach:

We believe that people are the experts in their own lives and that they have the inner resources necessary to be their own agents of change. This means that we approach counselling as a collaborative endeavour between therapist and client. It also means that we value inclusivity and welcome people of all walks of life. We meet our clients where they are at and approach them without judgment or expectation.

Integrated Care:

We believe that personal well-being is dependent on many factors, including physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. As a result, we strive to provide a holistic approach to therapy.

We are open to working with other health care providers to ensure clients receive consistent care but will only do so with express written consent. We are also committed to helping clients find trustworthy care in areas we are not equipped to address.

Accessibility:

We believe that all people should be able to access mental health support. As such, we are committed to ensuring our counselling services are accessible for our clients. This value is supported by: our location in the Beltline, with easy access to parking and transit; our easy online booking system and prompt response commitment; offering evening and weekend sessions; options for in-person therapy, online counselling, or phone sessions; and our commitment to providing a welcoming, safe, and supportive environment.

Innovation:

We are committed to being open-minded, creative, and current in all aspects of our counselling practice. This commitment extends to the kinds of therapy services we offer as well as the ways in which we offer them. It also applies to our therapists’ professional development and our collaboration with various therapeutic organizations.
