People often ask if they should attend therapy. Our response is that we all have times when we need a little help. Whether it seems like a small ‘bump’ in the road or a ‘mountain’ standing before you, making the decision to attend counselling is often difficult—it takes courage. However, it can be the most important decision you can make for personal growth and health. While problems may seem overwhelming at times, counselling offers you a new perspective and skills to overcome the problems.

At Sherry Maxwell and Associates we work with individuals, couples and families dealing with a wide range of issues. Below you’ll find our services and some information that might help you to decide if counselling and/or psychotherapy is the best route for you. But first I’d like to explain a bit of the difference, as I see it, between counselling and psychotherapy.

I often view counselling as for people who need some guidance or direction in the life or relationship. Sometimes people feel stuck and want to some help goal setting, sometimes they want a new perspective on life. Whatever it is, it’s helping the client to sift through the issues, develop some therapeutic goals and help them come to the place that their living the richer, fuller life they’re desiring.

I view psychotherapy as digging a little deeper. Sometimes it’s into who the person is and why. Sometimes it’s dealing with long buried trauma. It’s always and delving deeper into the person, who, they are, how they got there and helping them go to where they want to go now. While psychotherapy might be a part of couple or family therapy, it’s typically more often individual work.

In all of our work we take the goals set by the client and work toward those goals. For individuals it might be self esteem, stress, anxiety, disordered eating, abuse issues, trauma, addictions or needing someone to help them develop their life plan or path. We like to take people from struggling to acceptance to total happiness. You’ll often hear people talk about someone as ‘surviving’ trauma or abuse. We don’t like to leave people in a place of surviving; we like to take our clients to a life of THRIVING!
