About Aven Lugh:
I began my professional training in social work at George Brown College (GBC) in Toronto, Ontario Canada in 2004 when I entered the Community Worker Program. Whilst at GBC I received comprehensive training in group work, counselling skills, community development, and social service administration. I completed two practicums as a requirement of the program. My first practicum was at World Literacy of Canada where I learned about the function non-governmental organizations (NGOs) play in international development. I participated in organizing local fundraising events and literacy awareness campaigns to support their work in impoverished communities in India. My second practicum took place at Toronto Community Housing (TCH) where I worked alongside the Health Promotion Officer in a social housing community called Moss Park located in the heart of downtown Toronto. Whilst at TCH, I worked on initiatives aimed at strengthening tenant participation in community building activities and volunteerism.
Upon completing my Ontario College Diploma, I moved onto York University in Toronto, Ontario Canada where I completed my Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) in 2010 and Master of Social Work (MSW) in 2011. Whilst at York University, I focused my studies on clinical social work practice in community-based mental health. I also extensively studied queer and trans affirming approaches to mental health care. I completed two additional practicums as a part of my studies. My first practicum was at The 519 in their Queer Parenting Programs. As a practicum student I co-facilitated Daddies and Papas 2B which was a program to support gay, bi, queer, and trans men along their journey toward parenthood. I also staffed their queer family resource drop-in programs. My second practicum occurred whilst in my MSW at Family Service Toronto in the David Kelly LGBTQ & HIV/AIDS Counselling Services Program. I provided one-to-one mental health counselling services to adults who identified as 2SLGBTQ+.
Since completing my MSW, I have worn a number of professional hats ranging from case-management in child welfare services to mental health counselling in community-based mental health services. I have also worked in higher education as an educator and practicum coordinator. What I have learned from my years of experience is that I have a particular passion for supporting others in healing from trauma stemming from early childhood adversity, sexual violence, and psycho-spiritual injuries caused by marginalization and oppression. I also have a very keen interest in supporting people in deeply reconnecting to their spirit, so that they can live more fully in the wisdom of who they are and wish to be.
I work across the lifespan from an integrative framework that is trauma-informed and centres the mind-body-spirit connection.
Aside from my clinical training and development, I am a Ph.D. candidate at McMaster University in the School of Social Work. My academic program aims to critically examine how we define and understand adversity within our conceptualization of resilience. I hope to complete my doctoral program by end of 2023.
