Description

Speech, language, and communication are key to building connection and understanding between the objects that pass through our lives, the environment that we grow in and, the people with whom we share experiences.

Communication can come about in a variety of modalities from the words that we speak, our facial expressions, gestures, body language, writing, art, and so much more. When we are limited in one of these domains we can seek out to improve it or draw upon any of the others to bolster our ability to reach out and connect with the world around us. Building up skills in our speech and language or utilizing different ways of communicating is not always intuitive and sometimes it can be helpful to have someone guide the way.

Thats where a Speech-Language Pathologist enters the scene. Speech-Language Pathologists (or SLPs) are trained specialists who possess expertise in assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of speech, language, and/or swallowing disorders of people ranging from infants to adults. We are the people to come to when theres concerns about a child who is a late talker, when a person is feeling distress from stuttering, if someones speech isnt coming out clearly, or if there are word-finding difficulties.

I started my journey in the SLP world at the University of British Columbia where I received my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Audiology and Speech-Sciences in 2010 and then my Masters of Science in Speech-Language Pathology in 2013. I am certified through the College of Speech and Hearing Professionals of British Columbia and am a proud member of Speech-Language and Audiology Canada. My experience ranges from years in the acute care setting of hospitals helping those find their voices after a stroke or through degenerative neurological conditions. I have worked in slow-stream rehabilitation, high-intensity rehab, outpatient rehabilitation, and long-term care. I have owned my own private practice since 2016 where I focus my energy on helping children obtain clear speech, manage fluency (stuttering) disorders, gain confidence as communicators, work on their grammatical skills, and help them with reading.
