Biography:

My name is Christopher,, Calgary native, a father of three wonderful kiddoes and have a desire for lifelong learning about how facilitate the body to heal itself and support its proper functioning. I practice massage and manual osteopathy in two clinics, as well as from home, and have completed my formal osteopathic education in a doctoral program and supervised osteopathic bridge program (NUMSS, NAO, respectively). My practice incorporates advanced orthopedic skills, muscle energy techniques, facilitated positional release, craniosacral therapy, visceral manipulation and osteopathic mobilization that addresses both musculoskeletal imbalances and chronic pain. I finds purpose in effecting real change in client’s persistent issues; resolving long term challenges with a collaborative client focused approach with his wife, Donna (RMT) at http://www.infuzionmassage.com. I am eternally grateful for all teachers, peers, and most importantly patients, that continually hone my knowledge and skills. I am truly blessed to have such an incredible career, transforming people’s lives.

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathic manual therapy provides an evidence-based management option to reduce chronic pain levels, improve functional status, and decrease medication usage in chronic pain conditions, especially lower back pain. Pain management guidelines should include osteopathic manual therapy as a resource to alleviate chronic pain.

In 1874 an American physician named Dr. Andrew Taylor Still was a civil war surgeon that started his own branch of medicine. He sought non-medicinal and non-surgical avenues to help the body heal itself. Osteopathy looks at the body as a unit, knowing that its structure and function and interrelated, and that if you alter the dysfunction, the body can fight the dis-“ease”. It is a self-regulating unit that is designed to heal and defend itself. When that ability is disrupted, self-maintenance is compromized. Osteopathic treatment enables the body to re-establish homeostasis.

The main principles of osteopathy are:

The body is a unit (every system influences all others)

The body knows how to heal itself

Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated (ie. everything is connected)

Treatment is based on 1. 2. 3.

There are 5 models in osteopathy that form the basis of areas that are treated:

Biomechanical – bone, joints, muscle, tendon, ligaments, fascia (posture and motion)

Fluid Respiratory – thoracic inlet/outlet, diaphragms, tentorium and falx (arteries, veins, lymphatics, respiration)

Neurological – brain, motor nerves, sensory nerves (organs), autonomic nervous system (control, movement, co-ordination, immunity)

Behavioural – psychological, social, anxiety, depression, stress, sleep, sexual activity, valus, attitudes, beliefs

Metabolic energy – internal organs, glands (viscera)(all metabolic processes, hormones, regulatory processes, digestion, etc.)

Benefits of Osteopathy:

Holistic approach

Alleviate pain

Increase mobility

Decrease stress & anxiety

Gain confidence in your body’s natural ability to heal

Gain relevant information and tools to use in your daily life

Goals of treatment are vast and include pain reduction, wellness care, education, empowerment, and improve quality of life, and if possible reduce the need for prescriptions, over the counter medicines, and surgery. There truly is a link between body, mind, and spirit – all three must be strong to be healthy.

Osteopathy is a hands-on form of treatment. Palpation skills are essential to the therapist to help understand what their client’s body is telling them, utilizing a very sensitive touch to feel specific problems in their anatomy. Osteopaths understand assessment, unique to each patient, and utilize a very broad range of skillsets to create a therapeutic touch that is effective to facilitate healing: mobilizations, muscle energy techniques, strain/counter strain, facilitated positional release, point of ease, craniosacral therapy, and visceral manipulation.

Who is suitable for “osteo”? Anyone who has experienced trauma (accidents), surgery, childbirth, wear-and-tear overuse injuries (sports, workplace ergonomic issues), headaches/migraines, and cumulative effects of stress/anxiety. Also, osteopathic treatment is beneficial for those without pain, simply looking to keep up maintenance of good health and wellness.
